The Story Behind the Click: Beneath These Western Skies

Jan 10, 2025

The landscapes out west are lovely, but adding a great sky to the land makes them stunning. Luckily, out here, we have great skies. Being the daughter of a water man, I grew up having the beauty of clouds and skyscapes pointed out to me, followed closely by a mini-lecture on the science behind it.

The beauty is sometimes fleeting between the wind, the light, and the clouds, so I often keep my camera with me when I drive. While driving down South Fork, I admired the sunset with crepuscular rays (“God rays”). It was nice and promising to be a sunset worth capturing, so I started looking for a place to pull over to capture it.

But then I came around a corner that put the sunset at my back. I was facing the sky, which showed anti-crepuscular rays that looked almost like a crown of rays. While the sunset was nice, this was stunning. It captures the beauty of the Western Skies. From where I captured the first shots, I knew it was a short drive to a wide-open Western landscape, thus allowing me to capture this image.
