A Colorful Addition Has Been Added to the Cody Bandshell

Jun 20, 2025

The bandshell in City Park received a colorful facelift! Thanks to the work of the Cody Public Arts Committee, they zinged up the bandshell just in time for summer.

Many artists applied for the opportunity to share their art, and the committee chose the submission by James Overstreet from Cheyenne. Overstreet’s colorful style captures many elements of the Cody area. His work updates the bandshell originally built with money donated by Cody oilman Paul Stock.

While asking James about his path to becoming an artist, he said he grew up doodling, appreciating the art of comics, and taking many art classes. Then while taking courses at Laramie Community College, he realized this could become his career path. He continued his studies at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design in Lakewood, Colorado, through a scholarship due to his exceptionally high grades.

Bringing the West to Life in Spray Paint

He work embodies a contemporary Western feel and shares a view of a more colorful West. While his specialty is oil painting, he chose spray paint as his medium for this project. This gives it a more contemporary feel, and moves along more quickly than other mediums.

While here in Cody to do the work, the Community made a great impression on him. He is honored to become a part of it through his work and hopes everyone finds inspiration in his work. Overstreet expressed deep appreciation for the Cody Public Arts Council for seeing his work as a good fit.

The Cody Public Arts Committee operates under the direction of the City and recently completed another mural at the Bargain Box.

Park County Travel Council donated the funds for this community project using Destination Development Funds. PCTC has funded a mural project in Powell and one in Meeteetse is in the planning stage.
