The Story Behind “Mutual Grooming”

Mar 7, 2025

This photo came from a needed break from the busyness of life. We’re so lucky to have so much wildlife and beautiful scenery in our backyard. On this evening, I headed out to McCullough Peaks to look for the wild horses. I am a child of the West, and being in wide-open spaces where there’s not another soul around allows me to breathe. Having a camera gives me a reason to get out there.

The wild horses were around as a reason to pull over and just watch. Nothing terribly exciting was happening, just one band hanging out. No drama-filled photos would be found. And I was good with that.

Watching the horses graze for a good half hour became a meditation of sorts. It’s good to take time to appreciate peacefulness. Our society is driven by drama. Appreciating time with no drama or problems to solve brings a balance.

There’s magic in the mundane: enjoying the beauty of a sunrise, meeting up with a friend, or taking a walk. It’s always worth taking my camera for a drive. I come back refreshed with yet another photo to remind me that the best of life often comes in the small moments.
