The Power of Doula Support: Bringing Ancient Wisdom to Modern Families

Jan 2, 2026

Ever heard the term “doula” and wondered what it actually means? You’re not alone! You may have most commonly heard the term in reference to birthing, but it’s evolved into much more. A doula is a non-medical support person who provides emotional, physical, and informational assistance during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum – or for any life transition. Not to be confused with a midwife, that’s a licensed health-care provider; a doula is there for any and all aspects of the transition and to act as a grounding rod. From fertility journeys to end-of-life transitions and everything in between. There are now even wedding doulas!

From Ancient Greece to Modern Day: A History of Support

The story of the doula is the story of how we care for each other. The word “doula” comes from ancient Greek and means “women who serve.” Not servants, but women who provided aid and companionship. This type of female support isn’t a modern invention but a return to a system as old as humankind. Humans are pack animals. We seek out teams and collaboration. We desire connection & friendships. We are wired to “tend & befriend” and when isolated, our nervous systems react and we go into fear mode which is difficult to recover from.

The 1960s and 70s saw an increase in bringing birth back to the basics (woman empowered), effectively birthing the modern doula movement! Researchers like Drs. Klaus and Kennell began to highlight the incredible benefits of continuous support during labor. The 1986 study showed labor durations shortened from 15.5 to 7.7 hours. In addition, problems during childbirth dropped from 59% to 27% with the use of simple doula supportive techniques. They saw firsthand how a calm, knowledgeable presence could positively impact both the mother and child as well as the overall outcome.

My Decision to Become a Doula

I hadn’t expected to become a doula, but looking back, the path that led me here seemed random until it became clear that this has been my calling all along.

My work in Hollywood prepared me better than I could imagine. Making films, I wanted to help people feel emotions. Being a producer means long hours, staying multiple steps ahead of those I worked with. It also means thinking on your toes, being ready to pivot when needed. In a way, I was already doing doula work; helping birth films instead of humans.

My journey to birthwork began right here in Cody eight years ago. My own doula-supported birth was so transformative I knew I had a new path to follow. Many professionals agreed and today I combine my Hollywood experience with trainings in healing modalities like yoga & reiki to support others. I believe that becoming a doula is the culmination of my life’s work. Being a certified Doula & using my strong intuition has allowed me to empower families during their most sacred moments.

During pregnancy, two lives share one space, heightening a mother’s intuition & feminine energy. My goal is to protect that energy and hold space for the child & mother to be born the way they need to be. Providing a transformative transition into the world isn’t just a moment—it is the first step towards lifelong success & generational healing.

“If a doula were a drug it would be unethical not to use it.”

Beyond Birth: The Many Hats of a Modern Doula

So, what does a doula actually do? A doula’s purpose is to empower women & families with knowledge, tools, advocacy, and support for life’s biggest moments. Think of us as your personal guide and champion, always in your corner, complementing medical care. We fill a unique role, one that sits at the intersection of practical assistance & heartfelt understanding.

The core responsibilities of a doula can be broken down as:

  • Family Wingman: The birthing process impacts everyone involved. I support your partner and other family members as well by offering guidance and reassurance. This creates a more harmonious and supportive environment.
  • Info Hub & Translator: I help you communicate effectively with your medical team and provide information to empower you to make informed decisions. Basically, I make sure your voice is heard. Then I support your decisions as your advocate.
  • Physical Comfort Guru: I provide comfort measures such as healing touch, optimal positioning, guided breathing techniques, and make sure you’re drinking your water! I work with you energetically to tap into your body’s innate wisdom.
  • Emotional Cheerleader: I’m here to offer encouragement, hope, and provide a calming presence. I remind you of your power, strength, and resilience.
  • Postpartum Pal: The postpartum period can be incredibly challenging. It’s really the Fourth Trimester. I help with newborn care, breastfeeding, recovery, and adjusting to the new demands of parenthood.

Because every pregnancy is different, I offer customized packages tailored to your needs. I can be in the birth room with you or not. If you are simply looking at options and needing information, I’m here for you. Or if you want me assisting from fertility issues through postpartum (and beyond), then we’ll create that plan together. Doula care is becoming more recognized as a vital component of holistic well-being. I’m proud to be here in Cody, offering these important services during your life transitions.
