On the Move: Trailhead Expands to Mornings
Starting next Tuesday, The Trailhead Restaurant will open at 7:00 am to offer espresso, gourmet teas, and homemade baked goods at its new coffee bar. Owner Nathan Kardos has hired trained pastry chef Kirsten Buchel (yes, Zach Buchel’s sister), who will create everything from homemade puff pastries, croissants, danishes, and scones to fresh breads such as brioche, baguettes, and focaccia. “Kirsten studied at the Escoffier School of Culinary Arts and is a great addition to the team at The Trailhead,” Nathan said.
The Trailhead has teamed up with Cody Coffee Roaster to bring you local hand-crafted espresso. The team will also be creating fresh, corn-syrup-free flavored syrups for additions to coffee. Look for weekly unique flavors to come out. The espresso is also a welcome addition to their cocktails – including affogato (Italian for “drowned in coffee”). This Italian coffee dessert is made by pouring espresso over ice cream with an option of a splash of liquor.
The Coffee Bar
Nathan created the black walnut countertop at the coffee bar himself. To finish the sides, he used an ancient Japanese technique to preserve wood. Shou sugi ban is a process of scorching the wood with fire, cooling it, then cleaning and finishing it with oil. The coffee bar rests on Hope Sheet’s stage, where she played for six years.

The Coffee Bar will be open from 7:00 am – 10:00 am and will continue through brunch (10:00 am – 2:00 pm). This morning addition will make the Trailhead a more well-rounded restaurant that continues to serve the community and visitors in expanding ways.
