Who You’re Supporting:

Cal Duneman is a 39-year-old mechanic and wildland firefighter—a man who wears many hats but cherishes most the roles of father, husband, son, brother, and friend. Since being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at just 2 years old, Cal has faced a lifetime of challenges: countless doctor’s visits, blood sugar checks, insulin injections, and the constant vigilance required to manage his health. As he’s grown older, the toll of the disease has intensified. Today, Cal is battling stage 4 kidney disease, rapidly approaching kidney failure. His medical team has determined that without a kidney transplant within the next year, his chances of survival and quality of life are at serious risk.

The path to a transplant is daunting—emotionally, physically, and financially. While insurance provides some relief, it doesn’t come close to covering all the expenses. That’s why we’re starting this campaign—to rally around Cal during this critical time. Your generosity will help cover:
 1. Transplant Surgery and Medical Costs: A kidney transplant costs about $450,000. While insurance will cover most of it, Cal’s family will still need to pay $8,500 to $10,000 out of pocket for the surgery alone. This doesn’t include a lengthy hospital stay, rehabilitation, and other essential care.
 2. Travel and Relocation Costs: Cal’s surgery will take place in Denver, Colorado, requiring him to stay in Denver for 4–6 weeks during his initial recovery. His family hopes to secure short-term housing near the hospital to ensure he receives the care and support he needs.
 3. Post-Operative Care and Medications: Immunosuppressant medications, crucial for the success of the transplant, can cost anywhere from $50 to $2,000 per month. Additionally, Cal will require regular follow-up visits, lab work, and other related care for the rest of his life.
 4. Living Expenses and Lost Income: Given the physical demands of Cal’s job, he will be unable to work for at least 4 months while recovering. During this time, the family will need help covering everyday expenses.

Cal has been fighting tirelessly to delay the need for a transplant by making extreme changes to his diet and lifestyle. But despite his best efforts, his condition is progressing, leaving him weaker and more fatigued with each passing day. Now, it’s our turn to fight for him.
Your support can make all the difference—not just for Cal, but for his family. By donating, you’re giving a little boy more time with his dad and a wife the chance to hold onto her husband. Every contribution, no matter the size, brings hope and relief to those who love him.

Thank you for reading Cal’s story and for any help you can offer. Together, we can give Cal the brighter, healthier future he deserves.
