You Already Have the Answers. A Doula Helps You Find Them.

Mar 20, 2026

Transitions in life are always hard. Having someone to help you ride out the storm of change makes it so much easier. That solid and balanced companion gives a focus point when the world hits the reset button on your life. This is my life’s work. To not only be that anchor, but to also give you the tools and resources for you to make decisions as you transition.

In my last article, I talked mostly about what a doula does in relation to childbirth. But did you know that this work of providing support has naturally expanded to other life transitions? There are now doulas that focus on the transition to married life (wedding doulas), all the way through to even providing stable, steady support as someone transitions to death.

If you look at it, we have professions that lean toward doula work, such as business coaches, fitness coaches, marketing strategists, consultants, and more. Everyone needs support when making shifts in their life or in their business. It’s about finding the right knowledgeable professional to walk alongside you during the process. We are pack animals and work best with others.

How is a Doula Different than a Coach?

So, what makes a doula different than a consultant or a coach? A consultant provides direction and helps you develop skills, strategies, or systems. They focus on doing. Their assistance helps you think through problems, develop plans, and build skills.

Coaches and consultants are the right choice for the right circumstances. I’ve used them myself numerous times. However, a doula is most effective because of the continuity of care. This consistency is why a doula increases the success of the overall outcome of births. And it helps in a similar way for other shifts in life.

A doula holds space for you to access your own wisdom & power during life transformations. Doulas help you navigate the emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of change. Most humans resist change. If you feel you can be supported through the process, everything feels more doable. They are the grounding rod, helping you stay connected to yourself during these intense experiences.

A doula isn’t there to fix or improve, but to be with you through a profound change in your life. As said in the birth doula article, they are a loving force with you to provide comfort measures, advocacy, and nervous system regulation, all while witnessing the transition with you.
