REALTOR®, Pia Trotter Has a Passion for Helping People Make Transitions
While my heart will always be in Switzerland, I have proudly called Wyoming Home for 24 years now. Originally from Bern, the capital city of Switzerland, where I lived for 35 years, I worked in the Travel industry amongst many other great jobs, including short stints as a Stewardess for Swissair, in a Fitness Club and in a fancy Hotel in a Swiss Ski resort. Life was good. I worked hard, saved every penny, then traveled, three or four months at a time, and repeat. Many young people in Europe still do this. They work, save, and explore the world. I miss the easy access to other cultures there.
At 19, I was an Au Pair in Long Beach, CA. I thoroughly enjoyed this great experience and still stay in touch with that family. Of course, the boys were 4 and 7 years old then, and now they are in their 40’s. Oh, time passes so quickly. On one of my travels in 1989, I spent a week on the Crossed Sabres Ranch on the North Fork in Cody, Wyoming. Twelve years later, I returned to work for them and met my future husband during that summer. I moved here the following year. Should have bought land on the North Fork then, of course, I was too young and did not have the money, which is everyone’s problem.
In the first years here, I explored the area as thoroughly as possible. I wanted to know everything. It felt like I had found a place I had been fascinated with since I was a kid. Growing up, I had stacks and stacks of Buffalo Bill and Silberpfeil (Silver Arrow – a character similar to Buffalo Bill) comic books. These gave me my first love and fascination with the Wild West.
Realtor Life
All of this background makes me a good tour guide as a realtor and helps people transition to the area and integrate into the community. I love taking clients to see local gems like the Big Horn Canyon, touring them through the region to see the beauty of all areas. From Park County to Big Horn County, we head to Meeteetse to their fascinating museum and, of course, the Meeteetse Chocolatier and the Cowboy Bar are Must See’s. To show off Cody, naturally, there’s the Rodeo in summer, as well as all of the downtown stores and our exceptional museum. I let them know about Red Lodge and which direction to take the Beartooth Highway so they can best enjoy the beautiful vistas.
Once I establish a contact, I keep them updated about the local life – send info, Cody Calendar is a great tool, Cowboy State Daily, or I buy a local newspaper subscription for them. It’s these extras that help my clients better understand our area, lifestyle and how it works here.
I became a REALTOR® in 2015. I dove into education, got many designations, and learned all I could so I would feel secure enough to answer any question. I’d talk to the source: the Courthouse, the Assessor, BLM, the water districts, and HOAs, so I can pass on that information or guide my clients to do the same research themselves. I took the valuable advice from seasoned agents, lenders, and title companies. Everyone in this industry is so helpful. Realtors are a funny species: they’re the biggest competitors but also colleagues when working on a deal. We aim to achieve the same goal: providing the best possible experience for our clients.
The first five years as a realtor were tough. I had other jobs, was dealing with a divorce, and had kids in high school and then college. I look back and see how far I’ve come in the past decade. I’ve been a full-time realtor for about 8 years now and have built my reputation. I love what I do.
Integrity First
I’m passionate about helping people with their living situation. So often, it’s a huge “life situation” that puts them in transition. They want to move closer to family or away from it. Maybe they have a new job ahead of them here or elsewhere.
I put emphasis on helping women understand the good, the bad, and the ugly about this area, so they know exactly what they’re getting into here. This knowledge helps ensure the move doesn’t end in a divorce. Not everyone knows how few amenities are here compared to larger cities, and not everyone sees the reality of that, on possibly a short visit here. But those who do find happiness with all that this great area has to offer won’t be moving out after a couple of years.
I give my clients a lot of homework when they work with me. While I have gained knowledge and can be a great resource for my clients, I want them to get first-hand information directly from the actual source. I want my clients to understand what they are getting into so that they are still happy living here in 5 years. I am not about a quick sale. I want to maintain a good reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. That is ultimately the best investment for any businessperson’s future. Clients will refer you, come back to you, and send their Family and Friends to you.
Here are some Zillow reviews from clients about me.
Favorite Clients
Working with first-time buyers is a true joy. However, with current prices, I don’t see many of them. But I encourage them to talk to me and together we can make a plan to get them to home ownership.
I also love working with elderly folks, even though they are often sad to have to leave their homes and figure out how to downsize. It’s a lot to navigate, but my experience guides them to seek advice to avoid probate for example or going to get information on the benefits of creating a trust.
Realtors for Kids
I am also on the Realtors for Kids committee. This group helps kids and Families in the Big Horn Basin with one-time financial assistance. Fundraisers are organized to make this a reality. Each year, we hold a kids’ carnival where Brokers and Affiliates host a spot with fun games and prizes, and give away school supplies for kids of all ages.
We teamed up with Sleep in Heavenly Peace a few years ago and built bunk beds for kids who didn’t have one. It’s hard to believe, but, yes, it’s a thing, even here in Park and Big Horn County. Please watch for the carnival later in the summer and consider a donation so we can help more families.
Buyers or Sellers?
Do I prefer working with buyers or sellers? Both – they offer their unique challenges. They have a different motivation. Buyers need to be informed and guided, which often takes a lot of time. It might not result in anything. I might hear, “Oh, we (my wife) decided to move to a bigger city instead.” Yes, I might shoot myself in the foot with so much honesty, but I am genuinely committed to finding the right fit.
Sellers need a strong listing agent with a toolbox full of marketing, great photos, videos, drone footage, engagement on the front, communication with other agents, and negotiation skills. But the most important part is to get them to understand the market so we can successfully sell their property within the timeframe they want.
The Outlook for 2026
It’s hard to say what the market will do – interest rates won’t tank. We won’t see 3% rates any time soon, if ever again. But values of homes won’t tank either. We are in a strong area that has historically gone up or held its value. The market may correct itself when it gets out of whack, as it did after Covid. As long as we have Yellowstone, our great outdoors, and the quality of life, we will have people who want to live here.
Is that bad news for people wanting to buy? Not at all; many buyers are not well informed about their ability to buy or lack a strategy for achieving that goal. The lenders in our area can help with that. Together with them, we can create a plan of attack and get you into a home.
Sellers also have the same positive outlook – if they decide to sell and often leave their 2.3% mortgage behind– and if they are reasonable and open to hearing the data about what the market is like, any time is a good time to list. Winter is good, the fewer buyers ARE motivated, and you don’t compete with all the listings that come on in the spring when everyone is listing.
Springtime does improve the available inventory but you have more competition and buyers have more choices.
I will gladly explain this and whatever else is pertinent to each Buyer or Seller individually – I take time, we meet in person, go over everything, and then get the job done, together.
I am excited about 2026 and all the folks I’ll work with along the way. I’ve made many friends over the years in my real estate career, and that truly is the best part!
