The Story Behind the Art: Western Horizons
Layers of mountains have always caught my eye. While growing up, my family passed around the book, A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains – the Western travel adventures of Isabella Bird in the late 1800s. In the book, she talks about counting the layers of mountains along the front range of Colorado. She counted over a dozen. Since then, our family has counted layers of mountains.
During the year I lived on Jim Mountain in Wapiti, the smoke moved in during the summer and was thick enough to define the layers of the mountains. Again, I was counting. While I’ve never counted as many as Isabella, I’ve gotten close. But the result was this image, “Western Horizons.” The photo itself was nice, but taking the time to transform it into a digital photo watercolor brought it more to art that I saw through the lens when I released the shutter.
