The Story Behind the Click: “Red Dog”
Before living in Cody, I often spent a week or two in West Yellowstone before it became crowded. On an early morning drive to the Old Faithful area, I came upon a large group of buffalo cow/calf pairs. They were moving slowly but not bunched up on the road. That allowed me to slowly inch my way through them and delight in all the “red dogs” in the group (a nickname for the newborn buffalo calves with a reddish hue to their coats).
I came to a complete stop as I realized I had inadvertently separated a cow and calf. Mom was pacing me on the car’s passenger side, giving me the evil eye through the window. Once stopped, she instantly ignored me and made her way around to her calf. While waiting for the two to come back together, the calf just gazed at me – long enough for me to pick up my camera and capture the shot.
