Webcams Coming to Yellowstone’s East Gate
The East Entrance to Yellowstone will have webcams added sometime this summer. One will point east, and the other will point west. The North and West Entrances to Yellowstone have had webcams for years. Not only will this help everyone see the traffic volume, but we will also have a reliable eye on the area when wondering what the weather is like.
Last summer, the Cody Chamber of Commerce’s Government Affairs Committee applied for a Destination Development Grant from the Park County Travel Council (PCTC), setting the wheels in motion.
While efforts were made in the past to add webcams at the east gate, the limitation of internet availability halted those efforts.
When Superintendent Cam Sholly took the reins in managing Yellowstone, his top priority was taking care of the people who take care of Yellowstone. To that end, the Park Service added better internet to the east entrance through Starlink. Not only did this give the isolated staff a connection to the internet, vastly improving their quality of life, but it also helped assure reliability when running credit cards.
In addition, it opened the door once again to the possibility of adding webcams for visitors to see the richness of the east entrance. The Park County Travel Council unanimously approved the grant application. PCTC, the Chamber, Yellowstone Forever, and the Park Service collaborated to purchase two webcams and await NPS staff’s availability for installation.
The cameras will refresh every minute and be available through the Yellowstone Webcam page. Because the Park Service will own and maintain the webcams, rebroadcasting is permissible for the Visitor Centers, hotels, and others who wish to add it to their screens.
This addition should boost Cody’s summer economy and enhance Cody’s enjoyment of the North Fork corridor year-round.
