SUMMARY:Preparing Communities for Wildfire Resilience
DESCRIPTION:FREE Event Friday January 31\, 2025 4:30-7:30pm\nJoin the Greater Yellowstone Fire Action Network (GYFAN)\, in partnership with our Draper Natural History Museum and Shoshone National Forest\, for this free event\, Preparing Communities for Wildfire Resilience\, on Friday\, January 31 starting at 4:30 p.m.\nEveryone has a role to play in preparing for a fire event. When a community works together and becomes what we refer to as a fire adapted community “FAC\,” collectively we can be more prepared to adapt to wildfire. Come meet members of the Greater Yellowstone Fire Action Network and learn ways you can help promote fire on the landscape as an ecosystem restoration tool.\n• 4:30–7:30 p.m. Explore a fire truck! A Forest Service fire truck will be parked at the front entrance to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.\n• 5–6 p.m. Enjoy a screening of the film The Fire Problem in our Coe Auditorium. The film is a great historical account of fire in the West. Following the film\, GYFAN members and Shoshone National Forest fire staff will take questions and listen to perspectives on all things wildfire.\n• 6–7:30 p.m. – Smokey Bear joins us for the first 30-minutes of this open house after the film screening!\nThe Greater Yellowstone Fire Action Network (GYFAN) formed to address challenges communities and the landscape face with wildfire. Our network members and partners aim for a cultural shift in how we view and respond to fire. This shift can help save lives\, properties and help keep the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem thriving.\nFrom home hardening and fire’s role on the landscape\, to being smoke ready or even a volunteer neighborhood fire and smoke  ambassador\, we will be engaging with you about all things wildland fire. We are stewards of the forests. There are risks—and benefits—to wildfire. Let’s all work together to live with wildfire.\nThe goal of our network is to promote fire adapted communities across the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem and support a fire resilient landscape. Our network shares resources and knowledge across three states to mitigate fire on the ground and connect communities\, mitigation practitioners\, and fire agencies.  This networking aims to increase knowledge sharing\, capacity and the social capital needed to increase the pace and scale of fuels reduction work within and around communities at risk to wildfire. It also aims to promote fire on the landscape as an ecosystem restoration tool.\nWe must all be prepared to LIVE with wildfire and smoke. If a wildfire is burning\, it does not always mean destruction and devastation. It can often mean new life.  The 1988 Yellowstone fire taught us that.\nIt’s not IF a wildfire is going to happen\, it’s WHEN. Are you ready? \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Rephotographing the 1893 Absaroka Expedition
DESCRIPTION:Jaggar Revisited: Rephotographing the 1893 Absaroka Expedition\nby: Brian Beauvais\nLocation: Coe Auditorium\nJoin us for the February Lunchtime Expedition\, the kick-off for our 2025 season. Park County Archives Curator Brian Beauvais presents \, Jaggar Revisited: Rephotographing the 1893 Absaroka Expedition.\nWhile talks in our Lunchtime Expedition series will not be live streamed going forward\, they will be recorded and posted to the Draper Museum’s YouTube channel within a couple days after they take place.\nAbout the program\nIn the summer of 1893\, Thomas Jaggar took part in an expedition through the Absaroka Mountains to chronicle the recently created Yellowstone Timberland Reserve. The leader of the trip was Arnold Hague\, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey who had been surveying the Yellowstone region since 1883.\nJaggar was twenty-two years old and fresh out of college. He kept a journal of the expedition and field notes of his geological observations. He also took photographs of the geological features throughout the duration of the trip. Looking at Jaggar’s photos today provides a fascinating glimpse at the character of the landscape over one hundred and thirty years ago.\nIn the spring of 2020 Brian Beauvais began locating and rephotographing the images Jaggar captured in 1893 and on a later trip in 1897 so as to document the landscape over time. This undertaking involved hiking and horseback riding to numerous places along Jaggar’s route—some quite accessible\, others very remote.\nThis program will recount Jaggar’s 1893 expedition through the Absaroka Mountains using his journal entries and the photographs he captured as guides. Beauvais will describe the historic landscape Jaggar encountered and discuss how comparing old photographs with contemporary versions can illuminate changes occurring in our local landscapes.\nAbout the Speaker\nBrian Beauvais is the Curator of the Park County Archives in Cody. He is a member of the Park County Historic Preservation Commission\, the Park County Historical Society\, the Wyoming Historical Foundation\, and the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund. He holds a master’s of arts degree in history and is pursuing a master’s of library science.\nHe has written about and given public presentations on various topics relating to the history of northwest Wyoming\, ranging from hunting and wildlife conservation\, mining and prospecting\, recreational pack trips\, historic preservation\, vernacular architecture\, ranching\, homesteading\, and local art. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.
