SUMMARY:Galloping Gourmet: The Buffalo Bill Nobody Knows
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation by Steve Friesen on his book Galloping Gourmet: Eating and Drinking with Buffalo Bill on August 24\, 2024. Time to be determined. William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody was a hunter\, frontiersman\, Pony Express rider\, and showman. But gourmet? Yep\, Cody was as comfortable eating at Delmonico’s in New York City as dining on wild game around a campfire. He dined with kings\, queens\, princes and presidents as well as men like Thomas Edison\, Oscar Wilde\, and James McNeill Whistler. He was even an innovator\, opening the first Mexican restaurant east of the Mississippi in New York City\, introducing popcorn to the European continent\, and promoting American cocktails to England. These and other topics will be the subject of this lively presentation. Presentation time to be determined. \nSteve Friesen has published numerous articles about American history and is currently a contributing editor for True West magazine. He received his MA from the Cooperstown Museum Program in 1976 and has worked in museums for over 40 years. This included serving as superintendent of museums for the City of Greeley and director of the Molly Brown House. He retired in 2017 after serving as director of Denver’s Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave for 22 years. He is the author of four books: A Modest Mennonite Home; Buffalo Bill: Scout\, Showman\, Visionary; Lakota Performers in Europe; and Galloping Gourmet: Eating and Drinking with Buffalo Bill \nCody Calendar advertisers make this calendar possible. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Geology Field Trip – The Mesozoic
DESCRIPTION:The Mesozoic Era was an amazing time on Earth\, bracketed by two mass extinctions. The Mesozoic (Jurassic\, Triassic\, and Cretaceous periods) saw great changes in lifeforms largely dominated by the dinosaurs. In this roadside geology field trip with the Draper Natural History Museum\, we’ll look at local rocks that formed during this time\, observe lots of fossils\, and contemplate inland seas and deserts appearing and disappearing. \nJoin guides Larry Oliveria and George Miller for this exciting bit of “time travel” as we explore the Mesozoic madness of the Bighorn Basin near Cody! The four-hour field trip is designed for the student in all of us\, starting and ending at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and transporting you through the Mesozoic era in the interim. Intended for an audience of age 18 and older\, this programmatic offering is more than just a field trip—it’s an opportunity to gain intimate knowledge of your backyard! \nOur first geology field trips in May and June covered the oldest and youngest rocks in the Bighorn Basin. This trip will highlight the amazing middle period\, the Mesozoic Era. If you missed the first trip\, don’t worry\, it’s not a pre-requisite for this one\, which will start and end with aspects of the first trip. \nDuring this trip\, we investigate the more than 200 million years when dinosaurs ruled the land and giant reptiles ruled the inland seas from Cody to Kansas and the Arctic Circle to Texas. Topics include local Mesozoic geology as it relates to the petroleum industry; the extinction event that opened a world of opportunity for mammals; the greatest landslide in Earth’s history; and the reign of the dinosaurs\, for which the Mesozoic is probably best known. \nAlthough there is limited hiking or walking on this tour\, be prepared to get in and out of vehicles at six geologic stops. Water will be available\, but we ask that you bring a water bottle to help cut down on waste. There is one scheduled bathroom break\, but be prepared to spend the 4-hour period away from restrooms. \nLimited to a maximum of 8 people. $85 for non-members; $65 for Center of the West members and for students. Register at tickets.centerofthewest.org. \nCody Calendar advertisers make this calendar possible. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Expedition: Canada Lynx
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the September Lunchtime Expedition\, “A Specialist Carnivore at its Southern Range Periphery: Canada Lynx in Disturbed Landscapes\,” presented by Dr. John Squires\, Research Wildlife Biologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rocky Mountain Research Station in Missoula\, Montana. \nThe in-person talk takes place in the Center’s Coe Auditorium\, with a virtual option available at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_3UViCAd6TcC5m3gEmPNusg#/registration \nAs fire and insect outbreaks increase across the West\, our need to understand how natural and human-caused disturbances impact forest wildlife is increasingly urgent. This is especially true with the added challenges of a changing climate and an ever-expanding human footprint across natural landscapes. \nCanada lynx (Lynx canadensis) occupy high elevation\, subalpine forests that have been impacted by natural disturbance for millennia. However\, in the Northern and Southern Rocky Mountains of the West\, the pace and extent of this disturbance is increasing\, resulting in changes to forest age\, type\, and arrangement that affect lynx as well as other species\, even human recreationists. Land management agencies also struggle to balance the need for species conservation with the desire for forest products\, increased fire resilience\, and outdoor recreation in this era of new disturbance. \nFor the past many years\, Squires has logged Canada lynx movement with GPS collars to find patterns in how they use disturbed landscapes. By combining lynx locations\, satellite images\, and field measurements of vegetation and recreation\, that research provides answers and guidance to land managers about how to conserve this species in a changing world. In this presentation\, Squires discusses insights into how this elusive cat responds to natural and human-caused disturbance within the context of lynx conservation and forest management. \nCody Calendar advertisers make this calendar possible. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.
