DESCRIPTION:Cody Youth Climbing Camp\nOur Cody Youth Climbing Camp is open to youth of all backgrounds who live in northwest Wyoming and want to explore the amazing rock climbing resources in their backyard. This educational climbing camp focuses on three main learning objectives: safety\, sustainability\, and supportiveness. Safety is our first priority as participants learn the fundamentals of climbing safety systems and technique they climb outdoors west of Cody. Sustainability is also very important as we place great emphasis on teaching Leave No Trace practices to help participants become more sustainable users of this pristine resource. We also work hard to foster a supportive learning environment for participants to feel included\, valued\, and part of a team that works together. This camp is physically and mentally challenging but highly rewarding as participants learn new skills\, explore a beautiful place\, and have a lot of fun! \nDates\nSession 1: June 10-13\, 2024\nSession 2: July 8-11\, 2024 \nLocations\nSelect locations near Cody and Wapiti\, Wyoming \nAges\n10-18 years old \nPrice\n$300 ($75 deposit at sign up\, remainder due two weeks before camp). This includes gratuity for the guides working the camp. \nAvailability\n12 spots per camp \nTransportation and logistics\nDue to our insurance policy we do not provide transportation for this camp. DESCRIPTION:Join our Whitney Western Art Museum for James Bama’s Photographs: An Essential Tool\, a free\, special program in the occasional Peter Hassrick Public Program series on Tuesday\, July 9 in the Buffalo Bill Center of the West’s Coe Auditorium. This presentation is in conjunction with the special exhibition James Bama’s Photographs: Portraits of the West\, on view in our John Bunker Sands Photography Gallery through August 4\, 2024.\nPresenter Thomas Brent Smith is the Wylodean and Bill Saxon Director of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma. This event represents a homecoming of sorts for Smith\, who was a Resident Fellow in the Center’s McCracken Research Library in 2005\, researching the art of James Bama\, the subject of his Master’s thesis. Smith recorded five interviews with Bama and got to know him both as a scholar and friend.\nAbout the program\nAn artist known for his realism; James Bama used photography as an essential tool. His photography practice\, however\, went well beyond delineation. It became a way for the artist to engage\, create\, and carefully deliberate over what became his finished works. Bama’s camera gave him an entrée to engage with people who on the surface were dissimilar to the New Yorker who went West. The gregarious artists captured images of a wide cross section of people in the Mountain West\, some of whom became subjects for his paintings. Among his most timely and compelling photographs and paintings are a group of works coinciding with the rise of the American Indian Movement. The series captures an important political moment while also acknowledging the painter’s rich artistic influences from photographers Edward S. Blair\, in his saddle shop in Pinedale. After  attending high school in Cheyenne\, he expanded his leatherwork and  deepened his knowledge of saddles while working at the T.J. Holes Saddle  Shop. DESCRIPTION:SWIFTWATER RESCUE SKILLS COURSE \nDevelop your knowledge of river safety and build your skills and confidence. This 2-day course follows the ACA (American Canoe Association) Level-4 curriculum and is designed around recreational river runners and is boater-specific. We will spend time learning skills on dry land as well applying them on the river. DESCRIPTION:End your week by joining the Park County UW Extension office in our Wyoming Walks initiative on July 26th at 5:30 PM MST. We’ll meet at the Markham and New Cody reservoir loop trail. This walk will have an emphasis on nature\, birds\, and wildflowers and will take ~1 hour. \nThis is the first walk in a series of 3 this summer.
