SUMMARY:Trip Notes: Your First Backpacking Trip
DESCRIPTION:Most people think backpacking around here requires expensive gear\, expert skills\, and nerves of steel to deal with grizzlies. It doesn’t.\nWe will walk you through three accessible overnight trips within 60 miles of Cody – places where you can test your comfort level\, build skills\, and actually enjoy yourself. We’ll cover what gear you actually need (not what magazines say you need)\, how to think about wildlife safety without paranoia\, and why just getting out on your first trip matters more than doing it perfectly.\nIf you’ve been thinking about backpacking but don’t know where to start\, or you’re nervous about doing it solo or with kids\, come ask questions. This is for people who want to go\, not people who already went.\nThis presentation is part of our weekly Pint Night series. Every Thursday\, we offer complimentary beer or non-alcoholic beverages to anyone with a Sunlight pint glass. Don’t have one yet? You can purchase a limited-edition glass at the event – 100% of the proceeds go directly to one of our five local nonprofit partners that get kids outside. Since 2010\, Pint Nights have helped contribute over $700\,000 to youth outdoor programs in northwest Wyoming. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Expedition: Hot Springs & Cool Beetles
DESCRIPTION:April 2\, 12–1 p.m. | Coe Auditorium\nLeon G. Higley is a Professor of Applied Ecology and Forensic Science in the School of Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  He has a BA in chemistry from Cornell University and an MS in entomology and PhD in entomology and crop physiology from Iowa State University. He is an insect ecologist\, with specific research areas including forensic entomology\, thermal biology\, plant physiological responses to insect injury (particularly photosynthesis)\, pest management decision making\, and other issues in ecophysiology. As a forensic entomologist\, Higley has contributed to 21 homicide investigations and 5 civil cases. Based on his research in Yellowstone National Park\, he is co-inventor with Robert Peterson at Montana State University of “a process for establishing uniform liquid films on polar and non-polar substrates”\, which received a U.S. patent in 2025. He has advised 30 MS and PhD students\, who are now employed professionally with state and federal agencies\, colleges\, and private industry. Higley is the recipient of various research and teaching awards\, including the NCB-ESA C. V. Riley Award\, the Entomological Society of America Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching and the Founders Memorial Award. He is the author of over 150 peer-reviewed publications\, 27 book chapters\, and 6 books. Higley also serves as an editorial board member for the journals Biology and Insects. He is an avid nature photographer (particularly of insects) and has exhibited in five gallery and professional showings.\nSummary of Dr. Higley’s abstract:\nThe tiger beetle Cicindela haemorrhagica thrives in Yellowstone’s thermal pools\, tolerating extreme heat\, acidic water\, and heavy metals. Researchers discovered unique adaptations: water-retaining abdominal grooves for cooling\, infrared-reflecting abdomens\, and heavy-metal sequestration in their exoskeleton. These features make it a top insect predator and one of North America’s most remarkable species. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Robyn Cutter Presents: “Mail Order Brides of the Old West”
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Meeteetse Museums on April 2\, 2026\, at 2:00 for a presentation by Park County Archivist Robyn Cutter. This talk explores the history of mail-order brides in the American West. Robyn previously gave this talk in Cody in February 2026.\nDrawing from historical records and archival research\, Cutter will examine how the phenomenon of mail-order brides emerged in the American West during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As the gold rush and westward expansion brought large numbers of men across the Rocky Mountains to mining camps and developing towns\, women were vastly outnumbered. While only a few prospectors found great wealth\, many men stayed in the region to ranch\, farm\, hunt\, mine\, or open businesses\, creating the foundation for permanent communities.\nAs these towns grew\, the desire to establish families and stable communities increased. Cutter’s presentation will discuss how single women from the eastern United States were encouraged to travel west to marry\, the circumstances that led to these arrangements\, and the realities these women faced as they began new lives in unfamiliar and often challenging environments. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Wyoming Aquatic Invasive Species Inspector Training
DESCRIPTION:The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is offering training for members of the public to become certified Wyoming aquatic invasive species inspectors. These trainings provide the necessary skills to inspect personally-owned and other watercraft.\nThe training includes information on basic biology of invasive species\, the impacts and distribution of AIS and their common transport vectors. It includes classroom instruction and a hands-on watercraft inspection exercise\, culminating in a certification exam. The training is free and open to anyone.\nAIS can be animals such as zebra and quagga mussels\, New Zealand mudsnails or aquatic vegetation such as curly pondweed.\n“Aquatic invasive species pose a serious threat to Wyoming’s water resources\, impacting agriculture\, municipalities and wildlife. Invasive species disrupt ecosystems and harm native species and prized fisheries\,” said Josh Leonard\, Game and Fish aquatic invasive species coordinator. “Public education about AIS\, inspection techniques and proper boat maintenance\, including Clean\, Drain and Dry practice guidelines\, is vital to safeguarding Wyoming’s waters.”\nTrainings are offered statewide as a one-day course from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. throughout the spring. The registration deadline is one week prior to the class date. The public can register using the Game and Fish’s online application. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.
