SUMMARY:Lunchtime Expedition: Listening for Bats
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Jason Riggio\, Assistant Project Scientist at the University of California\, Davis\, for a fascinating talk on the Absaroka Bat Census. The Absaroka Bat Census\, begun in 2022\, aims to study bat diversity\, seasonality\, and distribution in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Data from this research provides important information on bat occupancy and habitat use patterns in the region. Dr. Riggio reveals preliminary results from the three-year project.\nAbstract from the talk:\nAs the sun sets over the Absaroka Mountains\, bats take to the sky—but how high up the mountain do they go? For three summers\, we carried acoustic detectors from montane forests near Cody\, Wyoming\, through subalpine woodlands and into alpine tundra above treeline\, listening for the ultrasonic echoes of bats in places few people have looked before. What we found surprised us: eight species using habitats up to 11\,800 feet in elevation\, including several detected higher than previously documented in the region. In this talk\, I’ll share how we use sound to study these elusive mammals and what new analyses reveal about how bat occupancy and habitat use shift along the mountain’s elevational gradient. Our results suggest that even the windswept alpine—often thought of as too cold\, too harsh\, or too barren—may be an important part of the nighttime world of bats in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:The Legacy Clinic Seminar- Hormones
DESCRIPTION:Hormones: Imbalance Is a Symptom — Not the Cause\nMost people are told their hormones are “failing” and that replacement is the answer. But what if low or imbalanced hormones are not the problem — they’re the body’s warning signal?\nIn this seminar\, Dr. Christopher Thoma of The Legacy Clinic breaks down why hormone imbalances rarely happen on their own. Instead\, they reflect deeper dysfunction at the cellular level — involving energy production\, inflammation\, immune stress\, and impaired signaling.\nBefore starting hormone therapy\, learn why imbalances occur and how cellular health influences hormones.\nWhether you’re considering hormone therapy\, currently using it\, or struggling with fatigue\, weight resistance\, mood changes\, poor sleep\, or brain fog\, this educational seminar will give you clarity on why hormones shift — and what your body is actually asking for.\nLed by Dr. Christopher Thoma\, chiropractor and functional health practitioner at The Legacy Clinic\, known for helping patients uncover root causes and restore balance through systems-based care. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Trip Notes: Your First Backpacking Trip
DESCRIPTION:Most people think backpacking around here requires expensive gear\, expert skills\, and nerves of steel to deal with grizzlies. It doesn’t.\nWe will walk you through three accessible overnight trips within 60 miles of Cody – places where you can test your comfort level\, build skills\, and actually enjoy yourself. We’ll cover what gear you actually need (not what magazines say you need)\, how to think about wildlife safety without paranoia\, and why just getting out on your first trip matters more than doing it perfectly.\nIf you’ve been thinking about backpacking but don’t know where to start\, or you’re nervous about doing it solo or with kids\, come ask questions. This is for people who want to go\, not people who already went.\nThis presentation is part of our weekly Pint Night series. Every Thursday\, we offer complimentary beer or non-alcoholic beverages to anyone with a Sunlight pint glass. Don’t have one yet? You can purchase a limited-edition glass at the event – 100% of the proceeds go directly to one of our five local nonprofit partners that get kids outside. Since 2010\, Pint Nights have helped contribute over $700\,000 to youth outdoor programs in northwest Wyoming. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.
