SUMMARY:Art Walk Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:We hope you’ll stop by during the annual Art Walk to visit with Lea Schoenewald about her book documenting the early days of Gebo\, Crosby & Kirby. \nForging America’s Fuel Henry Cottle registered the first mining claim in what would become northern Hot Springs County in the late 1880s. Henry Monro and Frank Porter’s Cedar Mountain “Cowboy Mine” followed in 1898. In 1906\, Burlington Railroad built its southbound line from Billings\, Montana to Frannie and Worland\, Wyoming. The route was\, in no small part\, because of the quality and quantity of coal near Kirby. With a rail contract for a twenty-mile extension\, Mormon pioneer Jesse W. Crosby\, Jr. filed his mining claim in 1910. Naturally\, more entrepreneurs followed\, including Samuel Gebo. The coal camps of Gebo and Crosby were born\, forming a significant coal district that nurtured a true melting pot of nationalities. Author Lea Cavalli Schoenewald recounts the area’s heyday and the lives that powered its development \nCody Calendar advertisers make this calendar possible. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Geology Field Trip – The Mesozoic
DESCRIPTION:The Mesozoic Era was an amazing time on Earth\, bracketed by two mass extinctions. The Mesozoic (Jurassic\, Triassic\, and Cretaceous periods) saw great changes in lifeforms largely dominated by the dinosaurs. In this roadside geology field trip with the Draper Natural History Museum\, we’ll look at local rocks that formed during this time\, observe lots of fossils\, and contemplate inland seas and deserts appearing and disappearing. \nJoin guides Larry Oliveria and George Miller for this exciting bit of “time travel” as we explore the Mesozoic madness of the Bighorn Basin near Cody! The four-hour field trip is designed for the student in all of us\, starting and ending at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and transporting you through the Mesozoic era in the interim. Intended for an audience of age 18 and older\, this programmatic offering is more than just a field trip—it’s an opportunity to gain intimate knowledge of your backyard! \nOur first geology field trips in May and June covered the oldest and youngest rocks in the Bighorn Basin. This trip will highlight the amazing middle period\, the Mesozoic Era. If you missed the first trip\, don’t worry\, it’s not a pre-requisite for this one\, which will start and end with aspects of the first trip. \nDuring this trip\, we investigate the more than 200 million years when dinosaurs ruled the land and giant reptiles ruled the inland seas from Cody to Kansas and the Arctic Circle to Texas. Topics include local Mesozoic geology as it relates to the petroleum industry; the extinction event that opened a world of opportunity for mammals; the greatest landslide in Earth’s history; and the reign of the dinosaurs\, for which the Mesozoic is probably best known. \nAlthough there is limited hiking or walking on this tour\, be prepared to get in and out of vehicles at six geologic stops. Water will be available\, but we ask that you bring a water bottle to help cut down on waste. There is one scheduled bathroom break\, but be prepared to spend the 4-hour period away from restrooms. \nLimited to a maximum of 8 people. $85 for non-members; $65 for Center of the West members and for students. Register at tickets.centerofthewest.org. \nCody Calendar advertisers make this calendar possible. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Nate Champion and the Johnson County War of 1892
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an illustrated lecture by award-winning author and western historian Mark Warren\, who presents “Nate Champion and the Johnson County War\,” 1892. The event takes place Friday\, September 27 in the Buffalo Bill Center of the West’s Kuyper Dining Pavilion. Co-sponsored by our McCracken Research Library and the Pahaska Corral of Westerners. The presentation is followed by a book signing. \nAbout the presentation: A young Texas cowhand travels to Wyoming to stake his claim as an independent rancher. Nate Champion finds himself thrown into the crucible of the Johnson County War. This program reveals one of America’s most egregious acts of insurrection and how one man prevented the crime of the century and became a martyr to the common laborer. Warren’s years of research reveal why Western scholars consider Nate Champion to be one of the unsung heroes of American history. Join us to find out what conditions were like in Wyoming in the late nineteenth century that turned Nate Champion into a martyr for the small independent ranchers of the West. \nAbout the speaker: Mark Warren is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Georgia. At Medicine Bow\, his nationally renowned wilderness school in the Southern Appalachians\, he teaches nature classes and primitive survival skills. The National Wildlife Federation named him Georgia’s Conservation Educator of the Year in 1980. In 1998 Mark became the U.S. National Champion in whitewater canoeing\, and in 1999 he won the World Championship Longbow title. \nWarren has written extensively about nature for local and national magazines. He lectures on Native American history and survival skills\, and Western frontier history presenting at museums and cultural centers around the country. He is a member of The Historical Novel Society\, the Wild West History Association\, and Western Writers of America. His Wyatt Earp\, An American Odyssey trilogy was honored by WWA’s Spur Awards\, The Historical Novel Society\, and the 2020 Will Rogers Medallion Awards. Warren is a 2022 Georgia Author of the Year recipient for his book Song of the Horseman (Finalist\, Literary Fiction). Indigo Heaven and The Westering Trail Travesties are Will Rogers Medallion Award winners. \nWarren has eighteen traditionally published books: from Lyons Press\, Two Winters in a Tipi and Secrets of the Forest\, from Two Dot\, Wyatt Earp\, An American Odyssey\, from Speaking Volumes\, Indigo Heaven\, Song of the Horseman\, Last of the Pistoleers\, A Tale Twice Told\, Moon of the White Tears\, and A Copperhead Summer\, and from Wolfpack\, The Westering Trail Travesties\, A Last Serenade for Billy Bonney\, Nate Champion: The Texas Years\, and Nate Champion: The Wyoming Years. \nCody Calendar advertisers make this calendar possible. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.
