SUMMARY:Bat Ecology in the West
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the August Lunchtime Expedition\, Voyagers of the Night: Investigating the Ecology of Bats in the West\nPresented by Dr. Riley F. Bernard\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Zoology and Physiology\, University of Wyoming. \nThe in-person talk takes place in the Center’s Coe Auditorium\, with a virtual option available. If you prefer to join us online\, you may register in advance via Zoom webinar: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_EaX18w_PRmeA6NMrPPNhQw \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \nAbout the program\nNumerous bat species in North America are facing severe population declines due to anthropogenic stressors such as habitat loss\, climate change\, and the introduction of disease. While research on bats has been incredibly informative for conservation\, most research has been conducted in the eastern portion of the continent\, where bats are more easily accessible (i.e.\, in caves and mines during winter). \nBats in the West are just as susceptible to these threats\, but information regarding their ecology is lacking. Researchers in the Bernard Research Lab at the University of Wyoming are working to fill knowledge gaps related to bat ecology\, behavior\, and persistence. Specifically\, we are working to better understand where at-risk species roost during summer\, how they utilize our novel landscape\, and how they are affected by various stressors such as the introduction of disease (white-nose syndrome) and climate change. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Bernard provides a primer of what makes bats special and unique to study\, as well as provide a sneak peek into what her lab has been helping uncover in an attempt to save the region’s bats. \nAbout the speaker\nDr. Riley Bernard is an applied wildlife ecologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoology and Physiology at the University of Wyoming. Her research focuses on the ecology and behavior of cryptic species on topics such as foraging\, competition\, invasive species interactions\, the effects of disease on community structure\, species susceptibility\, and survival. She also uses tools from Decision Science to ensure the questions she seeks to answer provide the best information for wildlife and natural resource managers to make tractable and robust decisions. \nCody Calendar advertisers make this calendar possible. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:CHRIS CHAPMAN – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
DESCRIPTION:Chris started sewing at age five and has been a leather artist for fifty years. For much of her career she has been involved in historical research and reproduction work dating back to 16th-century European leatherwork\, clothing\, and artifacts. She has made museum-quality reproductions of Native  American and Early American garments and artifacts\, including bead and quill  work. Since 1991\, Chapman has been focused on the creation of leather  bonded furniture\, architectural elements\, and home accessories. Her work  brings a fresh perspective to the medium\, which she finds incredibly versatile  in that she can adapt it to nearly any time period\, style\, and design — from  Victorian\, Western and Spanish Territorial\, to Old English and Art Deco. Chris is inspired by historical references\, such as classic Western art and Black Forest influences\, and the natural world\, including animals of all kinds\, mountains\, and landscapes. “My great-grandparents were farmers\, horsemen\, farriers  and blacksmiths; their land remains agricultural to this day. I realized my style  of artwork is in my DNA.” \nCody Calendar advertisers make this calendar possible. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Artists in Residence: Firearms Engravers
DESCRIPTION:During your visit to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West\, spend some time with firearms engravers Jim Blair\, Gordon Alcorn\, Mary Dyk\, Marianne Kelley\, and Dean Philbrick\, all members of the Firearms Engraving Guild of America. They will demonstrate their craft and chat with visitors near the entrance to our Cody Firearms Museum from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. \nJim Blair began hand engraving in 1978. He is a master engraver\, a past vice president in the Firearms Engravers Guild of America\, and a member of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild. He is recognized by the Colt Company as a Master Engraver. Although mainly self-taught\, he gives credit to several engravers that have matured this craft into an art. An accomplished engraver in all aspects of the field\, he prefers to work on custom guns\, knives\, and jewelry\, but also does engraved prints and prints them on his own press. \nGordon Alcorn came from a background of drawing and woodcarving\, and began engraving in 2008. Mostly studying books and DVDs\, he is primarily self-taught and was greatly helped along with a week of study with engraver Ray Cover. In 2014\, Gordon presented his work at the Firearms Engravers Guild of America convention and attained the title of Master Engraver. He currently works from his home studio\, and his back-log is about two years. \nMary Dyk dates her interest in engraving to 2005. She first started doing gun stock carving\, but soon became interested in the metal engraving on guns. As a pen-and-ink artist\, Mary loved the fine detail of gun engraving designs. She found the GRS Training Center in Emporia\, Kansas\, which manufactures engraving tools. She found that pneumatic engraving machines made the learning process a lot faster. She started engraving jewelry (so she wouldn’t ruin a firearm). Mary has taken at least 25 week-long classes and was pleased to be able to attend three Grand Masters classes with Master Engravers Alain Lovenberg and Michael Dubber. \nMarianne Kelley began her engraving journey after finding GRS at the Dallas Safari Club in 2015. She signed up for her first basic class that summer. She first thought she would engrave knife bolsters and never imagined she would engrave guns. She attended a class on the “Henry Receiver” taught by Rex Pedersen at GRS in 2016\, and then the “Start to Finish Firearm” class in 2017. Now retired from her full-time job as a veterinarian\, she has more time to study the art of engraving. In 2018\, Marianne joined Lady SharpShooters. During her time with the group\, she has studied under Rex Pederson\, Diane Scalese\, Layne Zuelke\, Mike Dubber\, and Sam Alfano. In 2019\, she was nominated to participate in the Bobby Tyler Engraving Extravaganza and was chosen as one of the 10 finalists to engrave a Colt SAA. She won the competition in 2021. \nDean Philbrick began his engraving career fifty years ago under the direction of Master Engraver J.T. Modloff\, and has been fortunate to study under five World Master Engravers through the years. Dean has worked in many fields throughout his career\, including as a sign business owner\, Fire Chief\, EMS Director\, and Emergency Medical Technician. He retired from the Fire Service eight years ago and has since worked full time as a Master Firearms Engraver. He received his Master Engraver Certificate from the Firearm’s Engravers Guild of America in 2017. \nCody Calendar advertisers make this calendar possible. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Geology Field Trip – The Mesozoic
DESCRIPTION:The Mesozoic Era was an amazing time on Earth\, bracketed by two mass extinctions. The Mesozoic (Jurassic\, Triassic\, and Cretaceous periods) saw great changes in lifeforms largely dominated by the dinosaurs. In this roadside geology field trip with the Draper Natural History Museum\, we’ll look at local rocks that formed during this time\, observe lots of fossils\, and contemplate inland seas and deserts appearing and disappearing. \nJoin guides Larry Oliveria and George Miller for this exciting bit of “time travel” as we explore the Mesozoic madness of the Bighorn Basin near Cody! The four-hour field trip is designed for the student in all of us\, starting and ending at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and transporting you through the Mesozoic era in the interim. Intended for an audience of age 18 and older\, this programmatic offering is more than just a field trip—it’s an opportunity to gain intimate knowledge of your backyard! \nOur first geology field trips in May and June covered the oldest and youngest rocks in the Bighorn Basin. This trip will highlight the amazing middle period\, the Mesozoic Era. If you missed the first trip\, don’t worry\, it’s not a pre-requisite for this one\, which will start and end with aspects of the first trip. \nDuring this trip\, we investigate the more than 200 million years when dinosaurs ruled the land and giant reptiles ruled the inland seas from Cody to Kansas and the Arctic Circle to Texas. Topics include local Mesozoic geology as it relates to the petroleum industry; the extinction event that opened a world of opportunity for mammals; the greatest landslide in Earth’s history; and the reign of the dinosaurs\, for which the Mesozoic is probably best known. \nAlthough there is limited hiking or walking on this tour\, be prepared to get in and out of vehicles at six geologic stops. Water will be available\, but we ask that you bring a water bottle to help cut down on waste. There is one scheduled bathroom break\, but be prepared to spend the 4-hour period away from restrooms. \nLimited to a maximum of 8 people. $85 for non-members; $65 for Center of the West members and for students. SUMMARY:Ranch Tour: Ewing/Snell Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Ranch Tours August 10 – Join Ranger Christy Fleming and Homesteader Museum Registrar\, Avery Frank\, for the third and final Spark Ranch tours. Bighorn Canyon is partnering with the Homesteader Museum in Powell\, Wyoming. The Homesteader Museum is one of six places in Wyoming chosen by the Wyoming Humanities to host the Smithsonian Museum on Main Street (MoMS) exhibit titled Spark! Places of Innovation. \nWhat is spark? The story of human history is written in inventions and innovations. People are problem solvers. Sometimes we invent — create a completely new thing or a process based on new ideas. More often\, we innovate — that is\, we introduce a fresh idea or an invention into use in some way the at creates a new way of doing or thinking. \nAll it takes is a spark — an idea —to get started. Places of Innovation takes visitors on a journey through time and place across America to discover the stories of people who lived\, worked\, played\, collaborated\, adapted\, took risks\, solved problems\, and sometimes failed — all in the pursuit of something new. The themes addressed are technological\, social\, artistic\, and cultural/heritage innovation. \nBighorn Canyon will give three Ranch tours inspired by Spark! Places of Innovation with the Homesteader Museum partnership to meet the requirements of hosting the Smithsonian MoMS Exhibit.\nThe third and final ranch tour – August 10\, Off the Grid Living Then & Now at the Ewing/Snell Ranch \nParticipants should plan to meet Ranger Christy Fleming at the Lovell Visitor Center.
