SUMMARY:Presentation: Knowing the West
DESCRIPTION:Join us the evening of June 12 for this presentation in our occasional Peter Hassrick Public Program series. Mindy Besaw\, a former curator of our Whitney Western Art Museum\, presents Knowing the West\, based on a traveling exhibition co-curated by Besaw and Jami Powell that premiered at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville\, Arkansas\, where Besaw has worked since 2014.\nMindy Besaw shares insights about the exhibition Knowing the West\, the first major traveling exhibition to embrace the American West as more inclusive\, complex\, and reflective of the diverse peoples who contributed to art and life there. Americans often feel they “know the West\,” whether informed by direct experience or popular culture. The exhibition of more than 120 historic works by Native American and non-Native American artists brings together textiles\, baskets\, paintings\, pottery\, sculpture\, beadwork\, saddles\, and prints to encourage deeper exploration of a familiar topic. This lecture highlights the remarkable artworks and stories about the artists\, and reveals behind-the-scenes insight into the deeply collaborative process used to organize and realize the exhibition.\nKnowing the West premiered at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (September 2024–January 2025). It travels to the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens in Jacksonville\, Florida (March–August 2025) and North Carolina Museum of Art (March–May 2026). The exhibition is accompanied by a multi-author\, full-color catalogue\, published by Rizzoli. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT! Exclusive Tours and Trails: Buffalo Bill’s TE Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exclusive\, guided experience through the storied past of Buffalo Bill Cody’s legendary TE Ranch. Nestled in the breathtaking South Fork Valley\, this tour provides a rare opportunity to explore one of the most iconic ranches in the West. Once the personal retreat of Buffalo Bill himself\, this walk through history offers privileged access to this historic property rarely open to the public.\nEstablished by William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody in 1895\, the TE Ranch served as both a working cattle operation and a relaxing haven for the man who captivated the world with his Wild West Shows. Today\, the TE is still a working cattle ranch and in 2021 its owners and managers were named “Landowners of the Year” in the Big Horn Basin by the Wyoming Fish and Game Department.\nDuring this unforgettable event\, guests will see the original ranch grounds\, historic buildings\, and preserved landscapes that reflect Buffalo Bill’s pioneering vision. Participants will hear historical facts and stories that delve into Cody’s complex legacy and learn about the TE Ranch’s heritage\, including its connection to the Shoshone irrigation project and development of the Big Horn Basin.\nThis is more than a tour; it’s a journey into the past and a chance to walk where legends walked. With extremely limited group size\, personalized interpretation\, and exclusive access\, this is a unique opportunity for history enthusiasts\, heritage travelers\, and admirers of the true American West.\nThis Tours & Trails event begins at the Center of the West at 1 p.m. on Sunday\, June 15. We expect to return to the Center around 5 p.m. or a bit later. There will be quite a bit of walking at the ranch\, some of it on uneven ground\, so please wear sturdy walking shoes.\nSpots are limited and advanced registration is required. Cost is $70 for Buffalo Bill Center of the West members and $75 for non-members. Shared transportation to the ranch is available\, and tickets to this program include complimentary snacks and water. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.
