SUMMARY:James Bama’s Photographs – an essential tool
DESCRIPTION:Join our Whitney Western Art Museum for James Bama’s Photographs: An Essential Tool\, a free\, special program in the occasional Peter Hassrick Public Program series on Tuesday\, July 9 in the Buffalo Bill Center of the West’s Coe Auditorium. This presentation is in conjunction with the special exhibition James Bama’s Photographs: Portraits of the West\, on view in our John Bunker Sands Photography Gallery through August 4\, 2024.\nPresenter Thomas Brent Smith is the Wylodean and Bill Saxon Director of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma. This event represents a homecoming of sorts for Smith\, who was a Resident Fellow in the Center’s McCracken Research Library in 2005\, researching the art of James Bama\, the subject of his Master’s thesis. Smith recorded five interviews with Bama and got to know him both as a scholar and friend.\nAbout the program\nAn artist known for his realism; James Bama used photography as an essential tool. His photography practice\, however\, went well beyond delineation. It became a way for the artist to engage\, create\, and carefully deliberate over what became his finished works. Bama’s camera gave him an entrée to engage with people who on the surface were dissimilar to the New Yorker who went West. The gregarious artists captured images of a wide cross section of people in the Mountain West\, some of whom became subjects for his paintings. Among his most timely and compelling photographs and paintings are a group of works coinciding with the rise of the American Indian Movement. The series captures an important political moment while also acknowledging the painter’s rich artistic influences from photographers Edward S. Curtis to Richard Avedon and the Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art movements. \nCody Calendar advertisers make this calendar possible. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Global Warming in the Bighorn Basin 56 Million Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:Saddle Mtn PETM plant quarry\n \nJoin us for the July Lunchtime Expedition\, Global Warming in the Bighorn Basin 56 Million Years Ago\, presented by Dr. Scott Wing\, Research Geologist and Curator of Paleobotany for the National Museum of Natural History. Please note that this lecture takes place on the second Thursday of July rather than the first Thursday like most in this series. \nThe in-person talk takes place in the Center’s Coe Auditorium\, with a virtual option available at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_-XoD4Gh9TMKiHDatR3b6Xw#/registration \nWe live in a time marked by rapid increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the resulting global warming and other climatic changes. These changes in climate will last thousands of years into the future and will have long-lasting effects on plants\, animals and ecosystems. Our predictions of the future are improving\, but we still know dangerously little about changes to come. \nThe Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum\, or PETM\, was an episode that occurred 56 million years ago during which a rapid increase in carbon dioxide resulted in large climatic and ecological changes. The best place in the world to study the PETM is right here in the Bighorn Basin. This presentation discusses the question: What does close study of this long-ago episode of global change tell us about what might happen in the future? \nCody Calendar advertisers make this calendar possible. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Human-Environment Relations from Different Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special\, BONUS Lunchtime Expedition on Friday\, July 12\, co-hosted by our Draper Natural History Museum and our Plains Indian Museum.\nThe in-person talk takes place in the Center’s Coe Auditorium\, with a virtual option available at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_RWI0cv0aQoaLlkCdBDgBaA#/registration\nThe Swiss Graduate Program in Anthropology organizes an excursion to the Yellowstone National Park for students who do their PhD research in many parts of the world\, including Latin America\, Asia\, Africa\, and Europe on human-environment relations. \nYellowstone has since its beginnings inspired conservation of nature in many parts of the world\, especially in its recent past—since 1995 with the reintroduction of the wolf. This brought a new understanding of the ecological role of large predators in protected areas. However\, all these areas had been used by local and Indigenous peoples before becoming protected areas. The Swiss students have established research partnerships with local indigenous peoples to find out more about past and present human relations with predators (wolves\, lions and jaguars) as well as with forests in conservation contexts. \nThis collaborative research shows that these relationships have always been an integral part of social-ecological systems before colonial times\, when there was no extinction but a coexistence with predators as well as with other fauna and flora. The Indigenous co-researchers from Ecuador and Cambodia\, and the Swiss anthropologists\, will present joint academic and local knowledge in this presentation. The indigenous representatives will highlight local relationships with animals and plants from their perspective and speak about the challenges they face with western views about nature and conservation. \nOne focus of this talk will be on two indigenous guests from Ecuador\, with whom research is done and who will share their views on human-environment relations. Additionally\, two case studies from Kenya and Romania will illustrate what effects these different views have on human-predator relations. Similar findings are shown in the context of human-forest relations presented by an indigenous co-researcher from Cambodia. \nAbout the speakers\nThe Swiss students are Ariane Zangger and Lisa Alvarado from the University of Bern. Lisa Alvarado presents together with two representatives from the Ecuadorian Amazon\, Mayra Shiguango and José Narvaez on human-jaguar relations\, while Ariane Zangger presents on human-wolf relations in Romania. The third project on human-lion relations is presented online by Wilson Lemillion\, a Maasai from Kenya\, and PhD student Samuel Weissman\, who cannot attend physically. They are all part of the research project Convival Constitutionality: Human-Predator Interrelations in Complex Social-Ecological Systems (funding by the Swiss National Science Foundation)\, lead by Prof. Tobias Haller\, University of Bern\, who does the introduction. Neth Prak and Dr. Esther Leemann\, University of Zurich focus on local people-forest relations in protected areas in Cambodia. \nCody Calendar advertisers make this calendar possible. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.

SUMMARY:Eagle Creek and the Earl Crouch Mine
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a “Local Lore with Bob Richard” talk on Thursday\, July 18 at noon\, when Bob’s illustrated presentation discusses the history through today of Eagle Creek and the Earl Crouch Mine with stories and photographs. \nEarl Crouch worked as a hunting guide for the Frost & Richard Camping Company. The miner had been to the Klondike and back\, and later built and ran the Absaroka Lodge. Crouch found gold on Eagle Creek\, and once the boundary of Yellowstone National Park was changed in 1928 was able to mine it. When Bob Richard was just eight years old\, he washed dishes for the Frost & Richard Company during the summer and went along on a trip to Eagle Creek. Years later he inherited the mine and its claims from Crouch and worked it on weekends while he was a Yellowstone horse ranger. In the 1970s Bob turned the land—which he deemed to beautiful to “improve” with a road and mill—over to the Forest Service. Who better to tell us about this area and its history than Bob?! \nThese illustrated presentations have become so popular that we are introducing a slight modification. As an added perk of your Center membership\, members can register for free and enjoy priority seating. Paid Center visitors can also register for free. While non-members and walk-ins are always welcome\, they must also register and pay a nominal fee of $10\, which supports our speaker programming. \nTo register\, visit tickets.centerofthewest.org. \nCody Calendar advertisers make this calendar possible. \n\nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible.
