SUMMARY:Lunchtime Expedition: Hot Springs & Cool Beetles
DESCRIPTION:April 2\, 12–1 p.m. | Coe Auditorium\nLeon G. Higley is a Professor of Applied Ecology and Forensic Science in the School of Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  He has a BA in chemistry from Cornell University and an MS in entomology and PhD in entomology and crop physiology from Iowa State University. He is an insect ecologist\, with specific research areas including forensic entomology\, thermal biology\, plant physiological responses to insect injury (particularly photosynthesis)\, pest management decision making\, and other issues in ecophysiology. As a forensic entomologist\, Higley has contributed to 21 homicide investigations and 5 civil cases. Based on his research in Yellowstone National Park\, he is co-inventor with Robert Peterson at Montana State University of “a process for establishing uniform liquid films on polar and non-polar substrates”\, which received a U.S. patent in 2025. He has advised 30 MS and PhD students\, who are now employed professionally with state and federal agencies\, colleges\, and private industry. Higley is the recipient of various research and teaching awards\, including the NCB-ESA C. V. Riley Award\, the Entomological Society of America Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching and the Founders Memorial Award. He is the author of over 150 peer-reviewed publications\, 27 book chapters\, and 6 books. Higley also serves as an editorial board member for the journals Biology and Insects. He is an avid nature photographer (particularly of insects) and has exhibited in five gallery and professional showings.\nSummary of Dr. Higley’s abstract:\nThe tiger beetle Cicindela haemorrhagica thrives in Yellowstone’s thermal pools\, tolerating extreme heat\, acidic water\, and heavy metals. Researchers discovered unique adaptations: water-retaining abdominal grooves for cooling\, infrared-reflecting abdomens\, and heavy-metal sequestration in their exoskeleton. These features make it a top insect predator and one of North America’s most remarkable species. \nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible. \n

SUMMARY:Robyn Cutter Presents: “Mail Order Brides of the Old West”
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Meeteetse Museums on April 2\, 2026\, at 2:00 for a presentation by Park County Archivist Robyn Cutter. This talk explores the history of mail-order brides in the American West. Robyn previously gave this talk in Cody in February 2026.\nDrawing from historical records and archival research\, Cutter will examine how the phenomenon of mail-order brides emerged in the American West during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As the gold rush and westward expansion brought large numbers of men across the Rocky Mountains to mining camps and developing towns\, women were vastly outnumbered. While only a few prospectors found great wealth\, many men stayed in the region to ranch\, farm\, hunt\, mine\, or open businesses\, creating the foundation for permanent communities.\nAs these towns grew\, the desire to establish families and stable communities increased. Cutter’s presentation will discuss how single women from the eastern United States were encouraged to travel west to marry\, the circumstances that led to these arrangements\, and the realities these women faced as they began new lives in unfamiliar and often challenging environments. \nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible. \n

SUMMARY:Wyoming Aquatic Invasive Species Inspector Training
DESCRIPTION:The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is offering training for members of the public to become certified Wyoming aquatic invasive species inspectors. These trainings provide the necessary skills to inspect personally-owned and other watercraft.\nThe training includes information on basic biology of invasive species\, the impacts and distribution of AIS and their common transport vectors. It includes classroom instruction and a hands-on watercraft inspection exercise\, culminating in a certification exam. The training is free and open to anyone.\nAIS can be animals such as zebra and quagga mussels\, New Zealand mudsnails or aquatic vegetation such as curly pondweed.\n“Aquatic invasive species pose a serious threat to Wyoming’s water resources\, impacting agriculture\, municipalities and wildlife. Invasive species disrupt ecosystems and harm native species and prized fisheries\,” said Josh Leonard\, Game and Fish aquatic invasive species coordinator. “Public education about AIS\, inspection techniques and proper boat maintenance\, including Clean\, Drain and Dry practice guidelines\, is vital to safeguarding Wyoming’s waters.”\nTrainings are offered statewide as a one-day course from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. throughout the spring. The registration deadline is one week prior to the class date. The public can register using the Game and Fish’s online application. \nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible. \n

SUMMARY:Slow Art Day
DESCRIPTION:The Buffalo Bill Center of the West partners with ZooMontana to celebrate Slow Art Day in 2026.\nWhat is Slow Art Day?\nAccording to slowartday.com\, Slow Art Day focuses on “slow looking and its transformative power”. Museums around the world participate by pre-selecting artworks worthy of 5-10 minutes of intentional observation and inviting their visitors to slow down.\nWhy are we partnering with ZooMontana?\nWhen we think slow\, we think sloths! Winston the sloth lives in Billings\, Montana\, less than 100 miles away from the Center. An honorary Cody local\, Winston has been capturing the hearts of ZooMontana guests since 2020.\nThe gracious staff of ZooMontana are installing six representative images from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West’s collections in Winston’s enclosure and recording his response to each one.\nWhich image do YOU think will hold Winston’s attention the longest? Vote below when you donate! All donations equally benefit the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and ZooMontana. When you donate\, your name will be entered into a drawing to win a painting by Winston the sloth!\nWe’ll reveal Winston’s favorite image on Slow Art Day – April 11. You can check on Winston anytime through his livestreaming ZooCam:  https://www.zoomontana.org/zoocams\nOther ways to enjoy Slow Art Day: \nBuffalo Bill Center of the West Members enjoy free admission to ZooMontana on Saturday\, April 11\, 2026. Must present your valid membership card.\nZooMontana members enjoy free admission to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West on Saturday\, April 11\, 2026. Must present your valid membership card. \nTo learn more about the animals we care for at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West\, check out our Draper Museum Raptor Experience. \n“*” indicates required fields \nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible. \n

SUMMARY:Trip Notes: Climbing K2
DESCRIPTION:Only 862 people have ever stood on the summit of K2. Darren Rogers is one of them.\nA chemical engineer from Sheridan\, Rogers spent more than two years training and planning before making his summit bid in July 2024.\nRogers will walk through what it actually takes to attempt one of the world’s most dangerous climbs: the training\, the logistics\, the mental preparation\, the things that go wrong at altitude\, and what it’s like to stand above the clouds on the second-highest point on Earth. He’s also summited Everest\, Aconcagua\, Vinson Massif in Antarctica\, Elbrus\, and Kilimanjaro — so come with questions about any of it.\nThis presentation is part of our Pint Night series. Every Thursday\, we offer complimentary beer or non-alcoholic beverages to anyone with a Sunlight pint glass. Don’t have one yet? You can purchase a limited-edition glass at the event — 100% of proceeds go directly to one of our five local nonprofit partners that get kids outside. \nCody Journal advertisers make this calendar possible. \n
