SUMMARY:Lunchtime Expedition: How the Largest Dinosaurs Came to Be
DESCRIPTION:The long-necked dinosaurs known as sauropods are by far the biggest land animals ever to walk the earth\, rivaled only in size by the largest whales today. What led to sauropods’ exceptional size? Where\, when\, and how did their titanic sizes evolve\, and how did sauropods grow? And why haven’t other groups of reptiles\, mammals\, or birds evolved such immense sizes? These questions will be answered with the ever-growing fossil record and the field of paleo-histology\, which is the science of studying bones and other tissues under the microscope.\nDr. Mike D’Emic is a paleontologist and Associate Professor at Adelphi University in New York. He earned his doctorate at the University of Michigan studying the evolution of long-necked dinosaurs. His research takes him around the world to visit museums and excavate fossils. He has been excavating fossils in the Bighorn Basin with students and colleagues since 2007. Mike has published numerous articles on dinosaur evolution\, including a recent cover article for Scientific American. When not working\, Mike enjoys hiking in New York’s Catskill Mountains with his wife and daughter. This educational climbing camp focuses on three main learning objectives: safety\, sustainability\, and supportiveness. Safety is our first priority as participants learn the fundamentals of climbing safety systems and technique they climb outdoors west of Cody. Sustainability is also very important as we place great emphasis on teaching Leave No Trace practices to help participants become more sustainable users of this pristine resource. We also work hard to foster a supportive learning environment for participants to feel included\, valued\, and part of a team that works together. This camp is physically and mentally challenging but highly rewarding as participants learn new skills\, explore a beautiful place\, and have a lot of fun! \nDates\nSession 1: June 10-13\, 2024\nSession 2: July 8-11\, 2024 \nLocations\nSelect locations near Cody and Wapiti\, Wyoming \nAges\n10-18 years old \nPrice\n$300 ($75 deposit at sign up\, remainder due two weeks before camp). This includes gratuity for the guides working the camp. \nAvailability\n12 spots per camp \nTransportation and logistics\nDue to our insurance policy we do not provide transportation for this camp. We will meet participants near Cody or Wapiti each day of the camp for drop off and pickup. \nDaily schedule\nDrop off in the Cody or Wapiti area will be at 8am and pickup will be at 2pm. \nLessons and curriculum\nThis educational climbing camp includes hands-on lessons tailored to introductory youth climbers on the following topics:\nClimbing safety systems including knots\, belaying\, and rappelling\nClimbing movement and specialized techniques\nLeave No Trace and “Beyond Leave No Trace” practices\nLessons on the area’s geology\, ecology\, archaeology\, and history\nClimbing games and fun outdoor learning activities\nEquipment\nWe provide all of the following technical climbing equipment at no extra cost:\nClimbing shoes\nHarness\nHelmet\nBelay device and locking carabiner \nWe do not provide food\, water\, backpacks\, clothing\, or hiking shoes for participants. \nSigning up\nWe require a $75/participant deposit to reserve your spot in the camp. DESCRIPTION:Join our Whitney Western Art Museum for James Bama’s Photographs: An Essential Tool\, a free\, special program in the occasional Peter Hassrick Public Program series on Tuesday\, July 9 in the Buffalo Bill Center of the West’s Coe Auditorium. This presentation is in conjunction with the special exhibition James Bama’s Photographs: Portraits of the West\, on view in our John Bunker Sands Photography Gallery through August 4\, 2024.\nPresenter Thomas Brent Smith is the Wylodean and Bill Saxon Director of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma. This event represents a homecoming of sorts for Smith\, who was a Resident Fellow in the Center’s McCracken Research Library in 2005\, researching the art of James Bama\, the subject of his Master’s thesis. Smith recorded five interviews with Bama and got to know him both as a scholar and friend.\nAbout the program\nAn artist known for his realism; James Bama used photography as an essential tool. His photography practice\, however\, went well beyond delineation. It became a way for the artist to engage\, create\, and carefully deliberate over what became his finished works. Bama’s camera gave him an entrée to engage with people who on the surface were dissimilar to the New Yorker who went West. The gregarious artists captured images of a wide cross section of people in the Mountain West\, some of whom became subjects for his paintings. Among his most timely and compelling photographs and paintings are a group of works coinciding with the rise of the American Indian Movement. The series captures an important political moment while also acknowledging the painter’s rich artistic influences from photographers Edward S.
